The purpose of a protein skimmer is to remove DOC's (Dissolved Organic Compounds) from aquarium water, thus improving the quality of the water.

These skimmers have been developed for bigger aquaria. Like the smaller models, they are supplied with venturi pumps, that include a needle wheel for mixing air and water. The foam cup is conical shaped, to improve the foam production. The design of inlet and outlet ensure a long retention time of the bubbles in the skimmer. A separate pump is needed to supply the skimmer with water.
