Skimmers:
Protein skimming, also known as foam fractionation, is
accomplished by using a protein skimmer. The purpose of a
protein skimmer is to remove DOC's (Dissolved Organic
Compounds) from aquarium water, thus improving the quality of
the water.
UV Sterilisers: By forcing a thin sheet of water into
close contact with a germicidal lamp, many species of algae
and parasites are given a fatal sunburn and are inactivated.
This elimination of pathogens and algae is safe for fish,
since the action only occurs within the confines of the lamp.
No light is allowed to leak from the sealed enclosure so there
is no risk to fish, plants or other organisms.
Calcium Reactors: help to elevate and maintain
calcium levels in the aquarium. It maintains your kH
level. With calcium levels at or
about 380 with a properly maintained kH, you will have reached
the perfect level of calcium saturation. Another side benefit
of calcium reaction comes from the carbon dioxide. CO2 is
combined with aragonite or calcium carbonate to lower the pH
just enough to allow it to dissolve. Once this occurs, the
calcium saturated water is returned to the tank with trace
amounts of CO2. This CO2 helps promote photosynthesis when
your tank is in daytime mode.
Kalk Stirrers: The addition of Kalkwasser ( Calcium
hydroxide) today is now widely accepted as a means to keep
Calcium and PH levels high. Kalkwasser is simply Calcium Hydroxide
dissolved in water, the use of Kalkwasser is well documented
and very well proven in the keeping of hard corals and its use
is recommended. Kalkwasser when mixed with RO water is
alkaline with a pH of 12.6! You cannot simply mix Kalkwasser
and just drop buckets loads into your system. This would cause
a massive pH rise and the death of your fish and inverts. It
must be added gradually ideally to replace evaporated water
from you reef. The best method that is
now currently available is the use of Kalk mixers/stirrers.
